Louisiana Relief T-shirts

Sorry for the delay in posts – it’s been a busy few weeks around here.

I spent the last week on the Continential Divide trail in Colorado; enjoying wild cutthroat, awesome scenery, and some SERIOUSLY COOL weather (photos to come).  Now I’m back in 100+ Texas heat, sucking freon, doing laundry and getting ready to head back to the mountains with the family – this time to the Vail/Leadville area.

As for fishing here, it’s a full-on SUMMER pattern.  The carp flats are fishing very well with super clear water and perfect levels.  You just have to resign yourself to the fact that the water temps on the flats SHUT DOWN THE FISHING by 1pm.  Get it while you can.  The sand bass are going great guns in the morning and the evening bite (which I prefer) should start any day now).

Finally, as we begin to get some “good” news from the Gulf, a great idea for those that feel like there’s nothing you can do to assist the folks in Louisiana.  A Plaquemines Parish guides association is selling T-shirts with the profits going to guides that have lost revenue because of the spill.  Despite news releases to the contrary, fishing reports from the area have been pretty good. By November, I’m sure they’ll be back on the monster hunt – pulling in 30+ lb. reds and chasing records.  The damage, however, has been done in terms of cancellations in the short term for guides.  Hence the T-shirt sales.

You can pick up a shirt (or two) from Tailwaters in Dallas or online at Plaquemines FlyGuides.  I saw them yesterday and it really is a COOL shirt.

North Texas Fly Fishing Adventures with Joel Hays

Imagine wading through ten inches of clear water, trying to be as quiet as possible. Fifty feet ahead is a pod of large fish "tailing" on the flat. You strip out fly line, make the cast, and pull your fly in front of the lead fish. After agonizing seconds the fish spots the fly, rushes forward for a quick grab, and feels the hook. The silence is broken as the fish accelerates across the flat, quickly exposing backing on your screaming reel. Sounds like a great day on the coast, or even an exotic bonefish flat, right? Actually it's a great description of the usual day my clients have fishing for Carp on the flats of Lake Ray Roberts where many clients are blown away by the water clarity and the actual ability to sight cast along miles of flats. Big spooky fish in shallow water. They fight and tail like Redfish and can sometimes rival Bonefish in nervousness. This is an EXCELLENT WAY to hone your flats fishing skills and test your "eyes" where it's more about stalking the fish than simply stumbling upon them. You will be a better flats angler!
