A Little Bit of Last Summer
Posted By Joel on February 16, 2011
As promised, here’s a little bit of summer to get you through these last few weeks before the fishing starts. This was from a trip in early June with Matt Miller when everything just clicked for a great day (be sure to check out the slideshow!) . . .
Fishing Report – 6/6

Matt Miller on the flats of Ray Roberts I had a great day this past Sunday with Matt Miller of Dallas, hitting the carp and other species on the flats of Ray Roberts. Several parts of the magic flats equation all fell in line to produce a stellar day: 1) the weather was perfect (although DANG hot), 2) the warm, early June weather has really ramped up the insect hatches, 3) Matt could both cast on a dime and see fish.Matt ended up setting a new record for the most fish in a day (13) and even threw in a gar for good measure. Another key point – Matt was using a perfect rod for the presentations we needed to make on a calm, clear day. He was fishing a 8’6″ 5wt. Sage SLT which is a more “medium” action rod (it’s the series that the current ZXL’s replaced). As I’ve said before, you don’t need a cannon for these fish – it’s much more important to straighten a leader and hit a teacup at 25 ft. than to double haul 100. The rod still had enough “backbone” in the butt section to handle all the fish we caught (the largest was about 5 lbs.).
