The One

| July 23, 2008

The “One” is a new, custom-made, TFO Finesse 6’9″ one weight. It was made for me by Norm Goheen of Dallas and is an absolute gem! Prospecting small, alpine streams for native trout is one of my favorite forms of fly fishing; usually in central or southern Colorado. I love backpacking up a new drainage [...]

Mystery Fish Revisited!

| July 17, 2008

Amazing! That’s all I could say. If you look a few posts down you will find a “mystery” fish I caught in a tidal lagoon in South Carolina. Turned out to be a Mozambique tiliapia. Yesterday, my 6 year old son and I went fishing at our local pond for the usual suspects – bass, [...]

Introducing . . . The BLITZ

| July 17, 2008

I’ve had several clients tell me that their schedule only allows for one day of fishing in X weeks, months, or years. Many of these guys have said “Can we just cram as much fishing into one day as possible?” These trips have come to be know as Blitzes so I just thought I would [...]

Fishing Report – 7/11 I had a half day guide trip yesterday and we caught fish like CRAZY! I get to say “we” because I took the liberty to cast a line for a short spell after lunch. My client yesterday is a birder and photographer as well as an excellent angler so, while he [...]

Fish Mystery Solved I pride myself in being an amatuer naturalist – especially when it comes to aquatic species. So, I was dumbfouded last week when I pulled this fish from a tidal creek on Kiawah Island (see post below). I had no idea what it was but it fought like a bluegill on steroids [...]

North Texas Fly Fishing Adventures with Joel Hays

Imagine wading through ten inches of clear water, trying to be as quiet as possible. Fifty feet ahead is a pod of large fish "tailing" on the flat. You strip out fly line, make the cast, and pull your fly in front of the lead fish. After agonizing seconds the fish spots the fly, rushes forward for a quick grab, and feels the hook. The silence is broken as the fish accelerates across the flat, quickly exposing backing on your screaming reel. Sounds like a great day on the coast, or even an exotic bonefish flat, right? Actually it's a great description of the usual day my clients have fishing for Carp on the flats of Lake Ray Roberts where many clients are blown away by the water clarity and the actual ability to sight cast along miles of flats. Big spooky fish in shallow water. They fight and tail like Redfish and can sometimes rival Bonefish in nervousness. This is an EXCELLENT WAY to hone your flats fishing skills and test your "eyes" where it's more about stalking the fish than simply stumbling upon them. You will be a better flats angler!
